When Remote Travel Gets Real – Outback Emergency in Windorah

21 minutes

Outback roads are long, the landscapes are spectacular, but sometimes, life on the road takes an unexpected turn. In this episode, we hit the road from Bedourie in extremely windy conditions, and head for Betoota. The drive is breathtaking, with endless horizons, big skies, and that sense of freedom that only comes with travelling so far off the beaten track. In fact we don’t pass another vehicle all day! We overnight at the historic Betoota Hotel, one of Australia’s most remote pubs, before continuing on to Windorah. But not everything goes to plan. Jasper hasn’t been well the past few days, and when his cough worsens and his breathing becomes restricted in the middle of the night, we make the call no parent ever wants to make: triple zero. The Windorah ambulance arrives and Katie and Jasper are taken to the Windorah Clinic, where the incredible remote health team provide dedicated care and reassurance. It’s a reminder that while travelling Australia is the adventure of a lifetime, medical emergencies can happen anywhere, and they feel especially daunting when you’re far from major towns. We’re so grateful for the dedication of our regional healthcare workers and the support we received in Windorah!
