Exploring Queensland’s Sapphire Gemfields and the tiny towns that time has forgotten

Time to say goodbye to Outback Queensland and make our way towards Queensland’s stunning Capricorn Coast! This week we’re road tripping from Barcaldine to Central Queensland’s Sapphire Gemfields. We overnight in Alpha, one of the region’s tiny towns that time has forgotten, famous for its millions year old petrified wood forests. We get the low down from the locals on why the public fossicking areas have been closed to tourists due to bad behaviour, and enjoy a great meal at the local golf club. Then we’re on to Rubyvale to find our fortune fossicking the Sapphire Gemfields. Jasper scores a decent sapphire haul, and we catch up with the Brown Family who own and operate the Rubyvale Gem Gallery. Plus, the looming bush fires change our travel plans, so it’s off to one of our favourite Central Queensland destinations for an impromptu stay.
