Brodie Murray, a Wamba Wamba multidisciplinary artist, playwright and performer based in Naarm (Melbourne), discusses his works with insights and experiences, highlighting the importance of performance and spoken word art.
Brodie’s plays have been presented by Fortyfivedownstairs, Yirramboi and the Melbourne Fringe Festival, and he has been the recent recipient of awards such as the Melbourne Fringe Best Emerging Indigenous Artist Award and Young Creatives Award, Creative Australia First Nations Emerging Career Development Award, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins Arts Award, AFN (All First Nations) Multi-Talented Award and Victorian Mr NAIDOC 2023.
Brodie’s play Soul Of Possum premiered at the YIRRAMBOI Festival in 2021 and is now published as a hardcopy script by Playlab Theatre, while his new play, Wiran’s Dream, was a finalist for the Australian Theatre Festival NYC New Play Award 2026.
Drawing on oral histories, Brodie’s plays explore survival, resistance, and the contrasting relationships with Country, ecology, leadership, and spirituality; and the enduring connection between First Nations people and Country.
