Hamish Sawyer is a curator and arts writer whose career has spanned galleries and institutions across Queensland and Victoria. Born in Melbourne and raised in Brisbane, he studied art history at the University of Queensland and began working in commercial galleries in his early twenties.
His career has taken him from Brisbane’s contemporary art scene to the Queensland Art Gallery, where he managed regional touring exhibitions and worked on the Asia Pacific Triennial, travelling through Southeast Asia to commission new work for the collection.
He has also worked across regional galleries, arts writing, and independent curating, including a period at NorthSite Contemporary Arts in Cairns, before relocating to Melbourne.
Hamish is now the curator at Linden New Art, a not-for-profit contemporary art organisation marking forty years in its historic St Kilda mansion. He joins David Hunt to talk about his path into curating, the living artists and ideas that have shaped his thinking, and Linden’s Postcard Show, a genuinely open and democratic exhibition now in its thirty sixth year.
